normally when i want a fancy shoe, i always reach for a heel. but after i bought my valentino rockstud flats, i realized the power of flats as something that could be really dressed up without feeling dressed down. even though the initial price was steep (believe me, when sitting in saks, i thought, 'i'm really going to pay this for a flat?'), the cost per wear on them is pretty low now as i've been wearing them all. the. time. and while that's a good thing in terms of economy, i also don't want to wear them out. i've been searching for some other fun pointy-toe flats and found a wide range of styles in a variety of pricepoints. what are your favorites and are you into wearing fancy flats for a night out?

may means cinco de mayo, mother's day, and memorial day and the unofficial start of summer (or at least spring)...

one. i'm all about a sweater with interesting details. this one from vince has a stonewashed finish and rich texture...perfect for a chilly san francisco spring.

two. excited to see the anna wintour costume center exhibit on charles james, america's first couturier (this book is a good primer). i also can't wait to see how models and celebrities interpret his style and the new dress code at tonight's met gala.

three. a friend recently turned me on to mac's prep + prime lip, which is a great base layer for softening lips and making any lipstick last longer.

four. was chatting with annie a few weeks ago about some of tiffany's iconic jewelry collections, and decided to break out my elsa peretti teardrop earrings from college.

five. kevyn aucoin's the celestial bronzing veil in tropical nights is a wonderful bronzer for my darker skin...gives me just enough glow without being sparkly.

six. this mascara is thick, dark, and voluminizing while being organic.

seven. found these suede sandals from calvin klein over the weekend, and i love how minimal they are.

eight. wanting these porcelain mason jars from maker and moss for decorating around the apartment and storing makeup brushes.

nine. the eighties are back (did they ever leave?), and for me that means finding a great pair of slouchy denim bleached shorts. gap makes a pair for under $50 (and 40% off right now!)

currently coveting: spring jewelry.

i left two things off of my spring shopping list, probably for two reasons: first, i've already bought them and secondly because they've become such a part of my daily wardrobe.

the first is the céline knot bracelet i picked up in february. i had long admired céline's jewelry, but the stores in sf (neiman marcus, saks, and barneys) only carried one size in the bracelets. so when i was in new york, i popped in to check out the selection, and the thin knot was too beautiful to resist. even though it's an open design, getting a small ensures that it won't slip off my wrist (there's enough of an opening to get it off and on).

my other purchase happened because of new york as well. i had lunch with sarah and she was raving about her mise en dior earrings. then the same day i went to céline, i stopped into the dior flagship and saw the pearl and colored versions. while i loved the design, i wasn't crazy about the colors or the pearls, so i passed. but back in san francisco, after taking a peek into the dior shop within bloomingales, the salesperson casually mentioned the metal versions were soon coming in. oh, you don't say? "i can give you a call when they arrive." well why not? i went for the smaller silver/larger gold combo, which looked better against my skintone, and they've become my alternate to the diamond stud—still tasteful but a little more interesting.
